Zeronimo Vintage Zweigelt Review: A Sommelier's Take on This Premium Alcohol-Free Red

If you've been following Vino Zero for a while, you'll probably know that we're rather big fans of Zeronimo, and for good reason. I've previously written about their exceptional Vintage Leonis Blend, a wine that genuinely challenged my expectations of what a premium alcohol-free red could achieve. Today, though, I want to look at something a little different: the Zeronimo Vintage Zweigelt, another seriously impressive alcohol-free red wine from Austria.

While Leonis is undoubtedly the more powerful expression, the Zweigelt has plenty of personality of its own. There's impressive complexity here, with vibrant fruit, clearly defined layers of oak, refreshing acidity and a wonderfully persistent finish. It's another excellent example of just how far premium alcohol-free red wine has come, and a wine that deserves to be assessed on its own merits, rather than simply as an alternative to something containing alcohol.

First, a Little About Zweigelt

Zweigelt is Austria's most widely planted red grape variety, originally created in 1922 by crossing Blaufränkisch with St. Laurent. If you're unfamiliar with it, think somewhere between the freshness and elegance of Pinot Noir and the darker fruit and subtle spice of a good cool-climate red. That's a fairly broad generalisation, of course, but it's a useful starting point.

At its best, Zweigelt produces beautifully expressive wines with vibrant cherry fruit, lively acidity, supple tannins and a lovely savoury edge. It's also a particularly versatile food wine, and I think it's a very sensible choice for alcohol-free winemaking, provided the original wine has enough quality and structure to withstand the dealcoholisation process.

Zeronimo Vintage Zweigelt: A Few Facts About the Wine

  • Producer: Zeronimo – Heribert Bayer, Austria

  • Grape Variety: 100% Zweigelt

  • Vintage: 2022

  • Region: Burgenland, Austria

  • Vineyards: Approximately 50-year-old vines

  • Winemaking: Aged for approximately 15 months in small oak barrels before dealcoholisation

  • Alcohol: Less than 0.5% ABV

  • Style: Dry, complex and oak-influenced alcohol-free red wine

As with their other premium reds, Zeronimo begins with a properly made, traditionally vinified wine. I really cannot emphasise the importance of this enough, because you cannot expect to produce an exceptional alcohol-free wine from an unexceptional starting point. The quality of the original wine matters enormously, particularly when it comes to retaining texture, structure and complexity after the alcohol has been removed.

Now, let's get into the glass.

Nose (Aromas)

The nose is wonderfully expressive, with vibrant red and dark fruit aromas supported by distinct layers of oak-derived complexity. Ripe cherry and blackberry provide the initial impression, while vanilla, warm spice and subtle toasted notes add depth and interest.

What stands out is how these different elements come together. There's plenty of fruit, but it's certainly not a simple, fruit-driven wine. The oak is clearly present, bringing another dimension to the aromatic profile without completely overshadowing the underlying Zweigelt character. It's a complex and inviting nose that rewards a little time in the glass.

Palate (Taste & Mouthfeel)

On the palate, the wine continues to impress, with vibrant fruit flavours complemented by well-defined oak influence and a refreshing line of acidity. The cherry and darker berry notes carry through from the nose, while gentle spice and savoury undertones contribute additional complexity.

What I particularly enjoy is the balance between the fruit, oak and acidity. The oak provides depth and structure, while the acidity keeps everything lively and prevents the wine from feeling heavy or overly rich. This is particularly important in alcohol-free red wine, where achieving that sense of balance can be technically challenging.

And then there's the finish, which is genuinely impressive. Rather than disappearing quickly, as some alcohol-free reds tend to do, the flavours linger beautifully, with the fruit and oak continuing to develop long after the initial sip. That length is one of the most convincing aspects of the wine, giving it a sense of quality and completeness that I really appreciate.

Food Pairing & Serving Suggestions

With its vibrant fruit, layered oak character and refreshing acidity, the Zeronimo Vintage Zweigelt is an excellent food wine. There's enough complexity to complement more substantial dishes, while the acidity helps cut through richness and refresh the palate between bites.

I'd particularly recommend pairing it with roast duck or chicken, mushroom risotto, grilled vegetables or pasta dishes with richer tomato-based sauces. The oak influence also makes it a lovely partner for dishes featuring roasted herbs, earthy flavours and a little smokiness. For a more relaxed occasion, good-quality charcuterie and aged cheeses would work beautifully.

Somm Serving Tip: I'd recommend serving this slightly chilled, around 14–16°C, in a generous Burgundy-style wine glass. I'd also give it a little time to open up, as the layered fruit and oak aromas become increasingly interesting with some air.

How Does Zeronimo Vintage Zweigelt Compare to Leonis Blend?

This is probably the question I'd expect from anyone who has already tried the Zeronimo Vintage Leonis Blend, and it's a good one. Both wines demonstrate Zeronimo's commitment to serious winemaking, and both deliver a level of complexity that remains relatively uncommon in the alcohol-free red wine category.

Leonis is the more powerful and concentrated expression, with greater richness and a more commanding structure. The Zweigelt, meanwhile, offers a slightly fresher interpretation, with vibrant fruit, beautifully integrated oak layers and refreshing acidity giving it a different kind of elegance.

What I particularly like is that neither feels like a compromise. They're simply two different expressions of premium Austrian red wine, and I can easily imagine occasions where I'd reach for one over the other.

Is Zeronimo Vintage Zweigelt Worth Trying?

Absolutely. If you enjoy elegant, complex red wines with noticeable oak influence, refreshing acidity and a long, satisfying finish, the Zeronimo Vintage Zweigelt is well worth exploring. It should particularly appeal to drinkers who appreciate varieties such as Pinot Noir and other cool-climate reds, but who also enjoy a little more oak-derived complexity.

For those who have found alcohol-free reds lacking in depth or persistence, this is a particularly interesting wine to try. The combination of vibrant fruit, layered oak and impressive length gives it a genuine sense of character, rather than simply offering a substitute for conventional red wine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Zeronimo Vintage Zweigelt taste like?

Zeronimo Vintage Zweigelt is a dry, complex Austrian alcohol-free red wine with vibrant cherry and dark berry fruit, distinct oak-derived notes of vanilla and spice, refreshing acidity and an impressively long finish. It's an elegant but expressive style, with plenty of character and complexity.

Is Zeronimo Vintage Zweigelt completely alcohol-free?

Zeronimo Vintage Zweigelt is a dealcoholised wine containing less than 0.5% alcohol by volume (ABV). It begins life as a traditionally fermented red wine before undergoing a specialist dealcoholisation process. As it may contain a small amount of residual alcohol, it shouldn't be confused with a product guaranteed to contain 0.0% ABV.

What food pairs well with alcohol-free Zweigelt?

The wine's vibrant fruit, refreshing acidity and layered oak character make it a versatile food pairing option. Roast poultry, mushroom dishes, tomato-based pasta, grilled vegetables and charcuterie are all excellent choices. Serving it slightly chilled, around 14–16°C, helps highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity.

Final Thoughts...

I've said it before, and I'll undoubtedly say it again: alcohol-free red wine is one of the most technically challenging categories in modern winemaking, which makes wines like this particularly exciting. Zeronimo isn't simply trying to create something that resembles red wine. They're starting with a properly made wine, using traditional winemaking techniques and specialist dealcoholisation technology to preserve as much of its original character as possible.

The Vintage Zweigelt is another excellent example of that approach. What really stands out for me is the combination of vibrant fruit, clearly defined oak layers, refreshing acidity and, perhaps most impressively, the length of the finish. These are precisely the qualities I look for when assessing a serious red wine, regardless of its alcohol content.

Well done, Katja, Patrick and the Zeronimo team. Another impressive addition to the premium alcohol-free wine category, and one I'm delighted to have in the Vino Zero collection.
